Kegiatan Perkuliahan di Kelas dan Studio
Penyampaian materi secara tatap muka baik di kelas maupun studio, dengan menggunakan fasilitas seperti LCD Proyektor, OHP, dan Slide Presentation, sehingga dengan kelengkapan peralatan diharapkan proses belajar mengajar dapat dilaksanakan dengan sebaik-baiknya.
Kegiatan Praktikum di Laboratorium
Penyampaian materi kuliah dan atau praktikum di laboratorium dengan menggunakan fasilitas laboratorium berupa alat perlengkapan praktikum dan bahan habis pakai untuk mempraktikkan beberapa materi perkuliahan sehingga mahasiswa lebih memahami materi yang diajarkan.
Kegiatan Pembimbingan Akademik (DPA)
Kegiatan pembimbingan dilakukan baik terjadual maupun tidak untuk memonitor perkembangan studi mahasiswa yang dibimbing DPA yang bersangkutan sehingga terdapat mekanisme kontrol yang jelas akan progress kemajuan studi mahasiswa.
Kegiatan Bimbingan Tugas Akhir
Kegiatan pembimbingan mata kuliah Tugas Akhir dari mulai pembimbingan proposal, seminar proposal, skematik desain, seminar skematik, studio Tugas Akhir, hingga pendadaran. Mata kuliah ini merupakan matakuliah yang akan menguji kemampuan mahasiswa secara komprehensif dalam perancangan arsitektur. Kegiatan bimbingan yang intensif pada Tugas Akhir ini akan memastikan mata kuliah ini berlangsung dengan sebaik-baiknya.
Kegiatan Asistensi Tugas dan Praktikum
Kegiatan asistensi tugas dan praktikum yang dilakukan oleh dosen di luar jadual kuliah untuk meningkatkan kefahaman mahasiswa dan suasana akademik di luar jam kuliah.
Kegiatan Kuliah Kerja Lapangan (KKL)
Kegiatan ekstrakurikuler ke berbagai obyek arsitektural, dosen akan bertindak sebagai pembimbing KKL. Kegiatan ini dilakukan di luar jadual kuliah untuk meningkatkan kefahaman mahasiswa dan suasana akademik di luar jam kuliah.
Kegiatan Bimbingan Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN)
Kegiatan bimbingan mata kuliah KKN yang diampu oleh Dosen Pembimbing Lapangan melalui pelatihan, pengarahan, dan pembimbingan lapangan selama kegiatan di lokasi yang ditentukan. Matakuliah KKN merupakan matakuliah wajib universitas yang akan memastikan mahasiswa dapat mengenali permasalahan riil di lapangan dan menerapkan materi-materi kuliah sesuai dengan kebutuhan di masyarakat.
Kegiatan Tugas Berkelompok dan Kolaboratif
Kegiatan mengerjakan tugas yang diberikan oleh dosen kepada peserta mata kuliah untuk berkolaborasi menyelesaikan suatu masalah/penugasan. Kegiatan ini memungkinkan mahasiswa berdiskusi dan bekerja secara tim baik di dalam maupun di luar kelas. Kegiatan ini meningkatkan suasana akademik yang sangat signifikan di kalangan mahasiswa.
Kegiatan Presentasi Kelompok
Kegiatan yang dikembangkan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mengkomunikasikan gagasan secara kolaboratif.
Kegiatan Pameran Karya Mahasiswa
Kegiatan pameran karya mahasiswa untuk mendiseminasikan/publikasi karya mahasiswa kepada civitas akademika lain maupun publik secara umum sehingga suasana akademik akan meningkat melalui kegiatan pameran ini.
Kegiatan Seminar Tugas Akhir
Seminar untuk mendiseminasikan hasil Tugas Akhir mahasiswa yang terbuka untuk umum. Kegiatan ini meningkatkan suasana akademik di kalangan mahasiswa terutama untuk mengkalibrasi hasil Tugas Akhir antar mahasiswa dan dosen pembimbing Tugas Akhir.
Kegiatan Mengikuti Sayembara Desain Arsitektur baik di tingkat lokal maupun nasional
Mengikuti kompetisi yang diadakan baik oleh institusi UII maupun dari luar UII yang akan menguji kemampuan mahasiswa/kelompok mahasiswa dalam menyelesaikan persoalan-persoalan desain yang riil di masyarakat

Mekanismenya dilakukan melalui Himpunan Mahasiswa Arsitektur MiMAR. Aktivitasnya dapat berupa praktek kewirausahaan (dengan mendirikan Koperasi Mahasiswa), kegiatan olah raga, fotografi, ekskursi, penerbitan, dan kegiatan ekstra kurikuler yang lain, yang dikelola oleh mahasiswa-mahasiswa sendiri dan didukung oleh bidang kemahasiswaaan baik Fakultas maupun Universitas.
Penelitian Bersama Dosen dan Mahasiswa
Kegiatan penelitian bersama dosen dan mahasiswa, melalui berbagai program baik internal maupun eksternal, misalnya hibah penelitian PHK A3 Dikti. Kegiatan ini meningkatkan suasana akademik dan meningkatkan kemampuan dosen dan mahasiswa dlam melakukan penelitian secara kolaboratif.

Jurusan Arsitektur mempunyai sebuah unit semi otonom yang bergerak di bidang pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Unit ini bernama Lembaga Bantuan Arsitektur (LBA). Saat ini sedang berproses untuk dikembangkan menjadi Lembaga Konsultasi dan Bantuan Arsitektur (LKBA). LKBA menerima permohonan bantuan perancangan dari masyarakat luas, khususnya yang berbasis komunitas yang berencana membangun fasilitas umum dan sosial seperti masjid, pesantren, bangunan publik lain. LKBA akan mengusahakan bantuan ini dapat dikerjakan oleh para mahasiswa dan dosen. Namun demikian terkadang proses perancangan ini membutuhkan biaya seperti biaya pengukuran, biaya transportasi, biaya drafting yang diberikan kepada para mahasiswa yang terlibat dan lain-lain. LKBA untuk ini berusaha mencari sponsor namun kadangkala tetap dibutuhkan kontribusi dari masyarakat. Dalam hal pembiayaan ini LKBA masih sangat perlu bantuan dari para sponsor dan donatur. Introduction to Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII)
Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) or in English often called Islamic University of Indonesia, has an important role in the history of higher education in Indonesia. Its establishment in 8 July 1945 marked the first university established by the political and public figures of native Indonesian. One of the founders was Dr. Mohammad Hatta, the first vice President of Indonesia who co-proclaimed the independence of Indonesia with Soekarno (then the first President of Indonesia) on 17 August 1945. UII was considered nationally as the first “national university” that gave strong historical background and contribution to national level. In early 1960s UII branches were spread throughout Indonesia. But due to National regulation that prevented University had branches, remote campuses were then dissolved and became new local universities. Some of them were then became public universities in their hometown. Since the position also, in early 2000 the Ministry of Education offered to UII to be nationalized as public university. The offer however was declined by the Foundation as the University needed to maintain its independence and vision.
A chronological development of UII is presented in the following historical timeline
1945 | A general assembly meeting of the Masjoemi (Majelis Sjoero Moeslimin Indonesia ) was held in Jakarta on 27 Rajab 1364 (Islamic Calendar) or on 8 July 1945. The date becomes the founding date of the University. The meeting was attended by some of the leading political figures of the day including Dr. Muhammad Hatta (the becoming first Vice President of Indonesia), Mohammad Natsir, Mohammad Roem, and Wachid Hasyim. One of the decisions of this meeting was the establishment of Sekolah Tinggi Islam ( STI-Islamic Higher School ) by those leading figures, who became the institution’s founders. |
1945 | STI began operating on July 28, 1945, days before independence day of Republic of Indonesia of 17 August 1945. |
1947 | Renamed as Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) on November 3, 1947 to respond to the growing demand for a higher education that integrates general knowledge with spiritual teachings. Initially, UII had four faculties: the Faculty of Religion, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Economics |
1948 | Closed down due to Dutch military invasion, the capital city of Republic Indonesia was moved to Yogyakarta, including the UII. Students and staffs joined Indonesian military force to repel the invasion. |
1950 | shortly after the war, due to economic and political instability UII had to move its classes from place to place around the city of Yogyakarta and used part of the Sultan’s Palace and some of the faculty members’ houses as classrooms to run academic activities |
1961-1963 | UII gained stability and saw many improvement under the leadership of Prof. Mr. R.H.A. Kasmat Bahuwinangun (1960-1963). UII expanded with Faculty of Islamic Studies and Faculty of Tarbiyah as well as establishing new branches including in Purwokerto establishing the Faculty of Law and Syari’ah (Islamic Law). |
1964-1970 | under the leadership of Dr. Sardjito (a leading medical doctor in Indonesia), UII expanded to encompass 22 faculties, five were located in Yogyakarta and the rest were scattered in three provinces: Central Java (Solo, Klaten, and Purwokerto); and West and North Sulawesi (Gorontalo). |
1975 | government regulations prevented UII from maintaining educational activities outside Yogyakarta , UII had to close its branch campuses. Some of them became associated with local institutions, or became the embryo of new university founded by the state. |
1970-1980 | UII saw extensive physical development of its offices and faculty buildings, beginning with the current central office on busy Cik di Tiro Street . This construction was then followed by the development of three other campuses located throughout the city. During this period, several of UII’s faculties started to acquire the accreditation status and also initiated collaboration with both national and international entities, including Gadjah Mada University , King Abdul Azis University of Saudi Arabia, and The Asia Foundation. |
1985 | UII built new campus at Condong Catur for the Faculty of Economics |
1993 | UII built new main campus at Jalan Kaliurang. Most of UII’s faculties and buildings will eventually be located on these 34 hectares of land. 2013 | Hold for the first time National Institutional Accreditation (Akreditasi Institusi Perguruan Tinggi) and awarded A level (highest) and rank 12 nationwide for quality assurance. |
2014 | Awarded as top 11 universities on management on national level. The University has new administration that concentrates on the development of seven excellences as Strategic Plan namely: (a) Islamic Values, (b) Research Based Learning (c) Islamic Ethic, (d) System and Infrastructure, (e) Student Character, (f) Adaptable alumnae and (g) Institution Profile. |
2015-2016 | The University developed new standards for Internal Quality Assurance System (Sistem Penjaminan Mutu Internal). The standards comprises ten items namely (a) Management and Organization, (b) Education, (c) Research, (d) Community Service, (e) Yield of Service, (f) Output, (g) Facilities, (h) Governance, (i) Outcome and (j) Da’wa Islamiyah. UII was awarded as the first rank private university in Indonesia in term of research activities by Indonesian Ministry of Higher Education and Research. The university was also increased status as the highest level group of universities in research in Indonesia by the ministry. In the same year, the university gained 3 stars from QS Stars Rating system, and put it among best quality universities in Indonesia. |
Vision of the Institution
Besides nurtured by the founding fathers, the vision and mission of the University, express the will to deliver Islamic role as “blessing to the world” (rahmatan lil alamin). To achieve this ultimate goal the University develops four basic principle of Catur Dharma (Four Principles Roles of University) for each of the faculties namely (a) Teaching Learning, (b) Research, (c) Community Service and (d) Da’wa Islamiyah.
The University vision and mission statements are described as follows.

Towards UII as a mercy to the world, aspiring to become an internationally recognized university committed to perfection and Islamic values in the fields of education, research, community service and da’wa.
University Mission Statement:
Upholding Quran and Sunnah as the sources of eternal truth to convey mercy to the worlds through development and dissemination of science, technology, culture, literature, and art based on Islamic values in order to nurture scholars and national leaders with good ethical conduct and integrity, having excellences in Islam, knowledge, leadership, competence, independence, and professionalism.
The above diagram shows the integrative concept between the four role of University Catur Dharma, vision and mission statements as well as ten standards of quality. The basic roles of University Catur Dharma comprises four aspects namely (a) developing learning environment to nurture student’s character, (b) expanding local genius research, (c) offering inclusive services to all members of society and (d) transforming the society through da’wa into good citizen. Those roles become part of the quality standards of the University. The complete ten standards are described below (Table 1.1.):

Orang tua / Wali mahasiswa yang belum mempunyai account UII-LIA dapat melakukan registrasi melalui menu Registrasi Ortu / Wali atau KLIK DISINI. Setelah mengisi Formulir pendaftaran yang ditampilkan, kemudian tekan tombol kirim untuk mengirimkan formulir yang sudah diisi tersebut pada itsupport kami. Kemudian akan diberikan konfirmasi berhasil atau tidaknya pengiriman formulir tersebut pada tampilan website. Jika berhasil maksimal dalam 3 hari akan dikirimkan konfirmasi ke email orang tua/wali yang didaftarkan saat mengisi formulir. Hal ini akan dilakukan oleh ITSupport dari Badan Sistem Informasi, Universitas Islam Indonesia.

UII Academic Master Plan 2008-2038 is the long term plan document for the University. In this document the plan is divided into four stages:
Stage I : Teaching University (2008-2014)
Stage II : Excellent Teaching University (2015-2022)
Stage III : Pre-Research University (2023-2030)
Stage IV : Research University (2031-2038)
According to this long term plan, currently the University is in the Stage II to achieve Excellent Teaching University, which is defined as follows:
Excellent University in learning and education in curriculum development and research-based learning process emphasizing on local genius with international quality assurance.
The effort to accomplish this stage is formulated every four year in a Strategic Plan.
The Strategic Plan is directed to achieve a number of strategic objectives, beginning at university level and derived into faculty and department level to ensure the conformity of the objectives of all units in UII. These university strategic objectives in 2014-2018 adopted by Department of Architecture and Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning are further developed into program or operational plan as described in the table below.

The University has a system of Quality Assurance as part of whole University governance. The performance evaluation system of the Department of Architecture is also an integrated part in the management and quality assurance system of the University.
This management system in UII is developed comprehensively in the university and faculty level based on five principal managerial functions of planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling, to achieve the vision and deliver the missions. In the university level, this system is carried out by the Rector, assisted by three Vice Rectors (Academic Affairs, Internal Affairs and Student Affairs) and a number of Heads of Boards as the Rector’s think tanks in formulating University policies and regulations. Each Vice Rector is assisted by Directors to manage in the operational level of the university coordinated by the Vice Rector. Management in the faculty level is led by a Dean and a Vice Dean and a number of staffs in academic and non-academic divisions. The Department is directed by a Head of Department and assisted by a Secretary of the Department.
In order to prepare the Department for the application of KAAB Substansial Equivalency and later KAAB Accreditation, the Curriculum of Bachelor Program and PPAr are developed to fully comply with KAAB requirements. All the Student Performance Criteria as formulated by KAAB are properly distributed into courses according to expected level of competence.
Bachelor Degree Curriculum
The current Curriculum for Bachelor program is formulated in 2013 after a year review. Particular attention is given to a series of Architectural Design Studio (ADS) Courses. Serving as the “backbones” of the program, these courses run consecutively through all 8 semesters of the program, starting with ADS 1 and ending with Bachelor Final Project. Generally, the educational objectives of the program are maintained but the design of each courses is adjusted to meet the requirements of KAAB. SPC requiring design ability are identified and distributed in Studio courses. Other courses are designed to support the ADS courses delivered in the subsequent semesters.
Professional Degree Curriculum
Pendidikan Profesi Arsitek (PPAr) or the Profession Architect Curriculum are formulated a number of times due to the changing regulation of the Government and the demand of architectural professional world. The current Curriculum for PPAr was re-formulated in 2015. PPAr UII attempts to balance these external requirements with the intention of the institution. This program is designed to prepare graduates to be engaged in the professional practice as Junior Architect (First Degree). This preparation is carried out by immersing the students in professional architectural works in architectural firm and in campus, and by guiding them to reflect their works to develop the practical knowledge of architecture. Few SPCs related to professional practice are assigned to this professional program. Further details on PPAr-related issues are discussed in Chapter 2 and 3.
Course Delivery
The review and restructuring the Curriculum greatly affect the delivery of certain subjects, especially the ADS courses. These studio courses are delivered more intensively by increasing the amount of student activities in the campus so that they may be more frequently supervised by lecturers and tutors.
Experts in particular field in architecture and experts from related field (urban planning, visual arts, infrastructure design, community participation etc.) are invited to give lecture to enrich students’ knowledge while they are doing design studio.
Infrastructure
More intensive studio courses requires more comprehensive infrastructure to support their activities. Some rooms are reserved solely for studio courses so that students may have 24 hour access to their working spaces. This studio culture also encourages students to exchange ideas among themselves.
Laboratory activities are also intensified by providing more equipments. The Department acquire more tools for modeling and environmental measurement to enable students to improve their design works.
Currently, the Department develop IT-based image storage of students’ works. This database is instrumental in enriching design works, setting benchmark and avoid plagiarism.
Students’ Capacity
Students’ Capacity is improved generally in three strategies
Curriculaire activities. The activities are normally conducted in the form of courses both conducted by University and by Study Program. Courses conducted by University generally concentrate on the attitude and on general skill. Courses conducted by study program (i.e. Architecture) will focus on the development of specific skills and knowledge. The overall curriculaire activities must fulfill all four competencies defined in the Indonesian Quality Framework (see Table 1.2).
Co-curriculaire activities. The activities are generally conducted by the University for the purpose of development Islamic values and attitude. The Faculty and study program level may however enrich the co-curriculaire activities especially to develop soft skills related to the field of expertise (such as teamwork, communication skills etc).
Extra-curriculaire activities. The activities are generally conducted by students themselves under the “Student Governance” policy. Students are organized in three levels namely in University, in Faculty and in Study Program. They are organized in executive bodies to conduct all programs and representative bodies to control the program both in University and Faculty level. In Study Program level, students are organized in the form of association such as Himpunan Mahasiswa Arsitektur (Architecture Students Association). Those organization will develop student’s organization skills. For the specific interest, Architecture Student Association develop great number of variety of communities such as music percussion (Sakarepe), theater (7Garit), photography, etc.

The improvement of staff capacity is carried out in two ways:

– Improving the capacity of the existing staff
Research-based Education & Practice-Based Education
Research-based education is instrumental in improving the quality of the content in higher education. For field like architecture, however, practical knowledge is also developed in professional practice. The Department encourages lecturers to be involved in research and professional practice and disseminating the knowledge gained in these activities in education. This effort is carried out by:

Join Studios and Courses with Faculty of Architecture and Design Fatih Sultan Mehmet University (FSMU) in Istanbul
In this collaborative program students from UII and FSMU works together in small groups to design certain facilities based on their understanding of social, cultural and physical context in Istanbul and Yogyakarta. This program is carried out three times as:
Summer School 2014 in UII Yogyakarta attended by 27 UII students and 25 FSMU students
Winter School 2015 in Istanbul followed by 21 UII students and 25 FSMU students
Summer School 2015 in Yogyakarta followed by 38 UII students and 30 FSMU students
The Department also support and encourage students to participate in international exchange programs and conferences
In January 2016, after some clarifications on the submission of Application of Candidacy Status for the Department of Architecture UII, KAAB finally granted the status of “Candidate”, which lead to the submission of this APR. However, the final note that accompanies the letter of acceptance suggests that UII needs to make a better explanation regarding the management of Professional Studio within the Professional Program for Architects (PPAr). Therefore, this chapter explains the progress of achievement in response to KAAB’s concerns on the management of Professional Studio 1 and 2. In addition it also describes other issues related to the changing of policies that affect both the undergraduate and PPAr programs.
As indicated in the UII’s application for Candidacy Status, Professional Studio 1 and 2 within the PPAr are conducted “off campus”. This method is a result of negotiations between UII and IAI (Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia – Indonesian Institute of Architects) of Yogyakarta Branch, prior to the commencement of PPAr because UII wanted its PPAr graduates to be granted the status of “Arsitek Muda” (Junior Architect). The process of professional certification is further described in Chapter 3. In response to the need of quality assurance in the studio supervision process, the management has decided to move the venue of Professional Studio 2 “in campus”. As a result, the Department of Architecture has set up an additional studio facility to accommodate the activities of Professional Studio 2, which has been running since this semester, beginning in March 2016.
The moving of Professional Studio 2 in campus does not change the basic concept of Professional Studio delivery, i.e., incorporating the real architectural project into studio exercises. Within the Professional Studio 2 students are required to work on projects delivered by architects. In other words, the management of PPAr has made some agreements with its partnering architects to bring their work into the studio to be done by students. By this methods, the supervision of students is conducted under the same nature as any other in campus studio, i.e., Architectural Design Studio 1 to 7 within the first 4 years of study (see Chapter 4), except that the projects assigned to the students are real. In other words, the supervision by project’s owner remains in effect. Students are required to consult periodically the progress of their accomplishment.
The exercise of “in-campus and off-campus studios” in this Department is not unique. A report of Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ASCA) suggests that despite architecture schools in the United States and Canada must meet similar accreditation criteria, the programs are remarkably different especially in the attempt to introduce an ‘integrated’ professional experience’ in the education, i.e., a required co-op internship or off-campus experiences. Prior to the establishment of 4 + 1 program at UII about three years ago, the off campus internship was integrated with the 4 years curriculum of 2008 and before. However, since the modification of the curriculum in 2013 that led to the establishment of the 4+1 program (undergraduate plus PPAr), the previous co-op internship program was replaced by Professional Studio in the PPAr.
The introduction of “in campus” Professional Studio 2 has led to the adjustment of curriculum structure. Figure 2.1 shows the pre-2016 structure where both Professional Studio 1 and 2 were conducted off campus. The problem occurs in the second semester where Elective 2 has to be taken at the same time with Advanced Architectural Theory (AAT), because students have to wait until the end of the “off campus” Professional Studio. However, the starting time of AAT overlaps with half time of the “off campus” Professional Studio, which makes the proper supervision difficult to conduct because the students are not always available in campus. The structure depicted in Figure below also shows that there are only two elective courses offered. The students thus have no choices because taking two electives is mandatory.

In order to overcome such a problem, the “in campus” Professional Studio 2 has been introduced (see Figure below). This mode of delivery allows students to have a more controlled time in the studio than that of the previous structure (Figure above), because the mode of learning is the same as the previous studio learning they experienced during their first 4 years, i.e., Architectural Design Studio 1 to 7. In other words, the Elective 2 can be taken at the same time with Professional Studio 2, yet they can start the Advanced Architectural Theory before they fully complete the Professional Studio 2. In addition, the number of electives offered has been increased to 4, which gives more options and flexibility to the students to choose the electives according to their interests.

As discussed in Chapter 3, prior to the granting of certificate as “Arsitek Muda” (First Degree Architect) at the end of the PPAr, the students must attend an event called “Preliminary Verification and Validation”, which is intended to assure the quality of Professional Studio products before the are examined by LPJK (Lembaga Pengembangan Jasa Konstruksi – Agency of Construction Services Development). In previous years, this process was separated from the PPAr because by default, the granting of certificate is not part of university’s responsibility. However, starting this year (2016), the PPAr management has set up an agreement with both IAI (Institute of Architect Indonesia) and LPJK to integrate the process into PPAr. Figure 2.3 shows the flow of Competence Assessment, which ends with the granting of certificate. Further details on the process of certificate will be discussed in Chapter 3.
