Student Activities in the Department of Architecture
The nature of student activities in the department of architecture UII is based on team-work but at the same time relied on the individual excellence. Most of student assignments are team-work in nature to encourage leadership roles, deliberating roles, and encourage the spirit of cooperation among the students during their study and in the end of the day during their professional practice after graduation. Most of the courses in the department since the initial semesters introducing team-work based assignments including for non-studio courses, including history and theory courses.
The individual excellence are tested through individual tasks, especially in Architectural Design Studios and Final Project to show the quality of individual excellence and competitiveness both at national and international level. The most comprehensive course to test the individual excellence is Final Project. As the tip point of 4 year education (before 1 year professional program), Final Project is expected to challenge the student to overcome the complexity of design in certain theme as their individual quality and distinction. Moreover, the nature of assignment with mixed between team-work and individual excellence is also utilized in various courses to gain a more balance capabilities of the students in leadership and cooperative roles and individual competitiveness.
The department of architecture encourages the students to be actively involved in curricular activities to develop their leadership roles during their study duration. MIMAR Student Association was established in 1989 as the official forum for the students to enhance their leadership roles and ability. Other student activities include SAKAREPE (music instruments), 7GARIT (theatre), Archiblues (band), and etc. In the university level there are more variety of student activities unit (UKM) with more than 20 UKM. These curricular activities help to inspires and encourage creativity, self-confidence, and self-promotion for the students.
Provision of an International Environment for the Students and the Entry Exam
Recent effort of the department is to open 8 subjects including Architectural Design Studios and Elective Courses to be conducted bilingually in Bahasa Indonesia and in English. Other activities of the program are included: Double Degree Program, Exchange Program, Summer/Winter Scool, Visiting Professor, etc.
Every graduated student from high school has chance to apply to be architecture student. Unfortunately, the entrance competitiveness is higher time to time. Recently, our ratio between applicant and accepted student is more than 1:10. There is no differentiation between applicant from social and natural science concentrations in the high school, as long as pass the entry exam.
The entry exam in Architecture Department, as well as in other UII’s departments, will start by January and will end up by July each year. There are some optional methods to enter the exam; Computer Based Test (CBT), Paper Based Test (PBT), High Potential Student (Penelusuran Siswa Berprestasi: PSB), Low Income Student (Bidikmisi scheme) and Special entry by Qur’an Hafidz Student (www.pmb.uii.ac.id).
CBT is the most practical exam which is open every day except in sunday from January to July. The prospective student may apply directly in Admission Center in the main campus Jalan Kaliurang km.14.4 Yogyakarta. The student may also come to some certain high school (SMA) which has collaboration wit UII. The most important consideration is that the exam will have higher competitiveness as near to July. So it will be easier to take the exam at the beginning. PBT is not open daily basis but in every month. There will be 6 times PBT from January to July. The prospective student must come to the main campus and take the test there. Result of the exam will not be announce instantly.
The prospective student is also may apply for outstanding student scheme called PSB or Outstanding Student Scheme. With this scheme, student can apply for her or his high achievement in academic, arts, and sports which they have before. By this scheme, student has benefit with their achievement before. The last but not least is scheme for Quran Hafidz. The one who has memorize at least a half (15 juz) Quran Al Kareem will be accepted as student with scholarship from the university.
