In the Department of Architecture, Universitas Islam Indonesia, architecture is meant as a process of creating life through engineering space. We do our best to offer a balance educational process between architectural research and profession, explorative but sensitive design and reliability of engineering as well as awareness to human culture and environmental concern. Beside looking at modern architecture and new technology as part of our architectural endeavor, we, as part of Islamic institution, also see that the poor and the marginal communities are part of our challenge needed for rigorous intervention.
The Department possesses a very reputable position in the country. It is accredited by the Higher Education National Board of Accreditation of Indonesia (Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi - Indonesia No. 237/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-XVI/S/XI/2013 by "A" grade (outstanding) with 379 points(valid for 2013 – 2018), the highest achievement and rank among national schools of architecture. The Department is also a member of Indonesian Association of School of Architecture (IASA - Asosiasi Pendidikan Tinggi Arsitektur Indonesia - APTARI). Founded in 1987, the Department has already a strong academic environment with 28 full time academic staffs hold doctorate and master degree, and also supported by dozens of part timer of professional architects, engineers, and other related fields.
The Department now is going to meet international standard by complying its education for international accreditation. Five years education in architecture as acknowledged by Canberra Accord, now adopted in our department by focusing on professional education in additional ninth and tenth semesters. This optional fifth year program is fully supported by national body of architect IAI (Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia). By this scheme, students are now easier to fulfill their passion to be a professional architect since IAI license could be endorsed, while the rest of graduated students in fourth year could pursue their carrier in many fields such as designer, developer, construction, etc. The international standard we are following is also demanding for high performance studios, library, and other facilities. Fixed studio for second, third, and fourth year students ensuring the personal work space availability for each of them, while 24 hours studio guarantee everybody has a right to use facilities whenever needed. By this ideal studio atmosphere for architectural education, the strong student performance could be achieved.
The faculty comprises four major area of expertise namely history, theory and urbanism;digital architecture; building science and technology; and architectural profession and advocacy. As advancement of the expertise, the faculty members develop six research centers for their academic and scientific activities. Those are Sustainable Built Environment Centre (SUSBEC), Center for Real Estate and Built Environment (CREATE), Centre for Islamic and Nusantara Architecture (CITAR), Centre for Innovation Building Technologies (CIBTEC), Centre for Socius Design (CSD) and Centre for Green Urbanization Studies (CGUS). The centres promote research in the Department through conducting regular seminars, discussions as well as supervising student final projects. Furthermore, for professional as well as for social responsibility, we also develop the Architectural Advocation Body(called Lembaga Bantuan Arsitektur - LBA) that makes a direct linkage between staffs, students, professional world and also communities through apprenticeship and advocation.
